NEW RULES for High
School:
-
Games will be increased to 50 minutes,
running time.
-
Discounts will apply to multiple team entries (see below)
- The
playing surface is smaller (60’ x 130’ – though still the
largest touchline fields around), so the rules will be
modified to give kids the chance to exploit the space they
have and accelerate the pace of play.
-
2 PIAA Officials: Unlike many indoor facilities, all boys high school play will
still feature a 2-man referee system; all referees will be
experienced PIAA officials.
-
Minimal contact:
Strict emphasis will be placed on enforcing a minimal
contact rule – the focus will be on developing stick
skills, ball movement, off ball movement. Stick checks
are permitted but body checking is not permitted
(ideally - basketball with sticks). Physical and
aggressive play will potentially result in
expulsion/suspension. We want all players to play
“whistle clean” and honor the great game of lacrosse.
We don’t care who wins the game, our goal is provide an
opportunity for development.
-
No over and back rule
(except in the last 2 minutes; applies to team in the
lead) – this will encourage use of the whole field at
all times
-
Play will be 5v5
(including goalie)
-
Goalies will be
encouraged to be part of the offense and will have a
chance to improve their stick handling skills; no
more watching the play, they are expected to be part
of it!
-
1 Long Pole: No more than 1 long sticks permitted on the field (this will
promote safety, require better body position on defense
and permit defensemen to improve stick handling and
defensive skills using shorter sticks)
-
2 Players Back: 2 players must remain in the back court at all times or the
team will be offside. This will make for a robust 3v3
game when the ball is in the offensive end, with outlet
passes optional to the defensive end.
-
Minimum 3-Pass Rule*
– teams must complete 3 passes before the ball is “hot”
and eligible for a shot
-
this will place an
emphasis on stick protection, ball movement,
off-ball movement and development of take away
skills
-
the rule should also
give the goalies a measure of reprieve relative to
the shooting galleries of the past
-
Passes to/from
goalies do not count – this will encourage use of
the goalie as an outlet, promoting development of
quarterbacking skills.
-
10 Second Hold Rule to promote “Speed Ball”
- players may not carry the ball for more than 10
seconds in the discretion of the official.
-
This will encourage
ball carriers to look for help and move the ball
-
This will also
encourage off-ball movement and promote better talk
and cover skills on defense.
-
This will also
accelerate the pace of play, up and back.
-
No Timeouts (time only stops on injury in the discretion of the official)
-
All Substitutions on the Fly
(through substitution box only)
-
Face-off to start the game only; goalie will put the
ball in play after every goal to maximize playing time
and for work on outlets, clearing and riding; official’s
whistle will re-start play.
- No
overtime
- We will
assess the rules in the first few weeks and will welcome
feedback from the coaches.
- Games
must start on time – please have your teams geared up and
ready to go as soon as previous game is over ASAP. 5
minutes between games, we want teams to have a few minutes
of warm up before games.
- Please
also the see “League Rules” for more information.
*We are looking
for your input on this rule. Coaches have called in both in
support and against this rule. We are flexible on this ruling
and would like to hear from you.
